Living a life of self-centeredness is a sin. If we don't invite God into the center of our heart, it gets filled with something else instead of God. Our eyes become focused only on ourselves and we look to satisfy the desires of our hearts. Cain is the one who was overtaken by a self-centered attitude and ended up committing a horrible sin. Cain's heart was not centered on God and he didn't care about his brother. He only focused on how he felt and killed his very own flesh and blood. We should not be self-centered. Let's look at what the Bible says about being self-centered.
Not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
- Philippians 2:4 NIV -
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
- Ephesians 4:29-32 NIV -
"What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come - sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person."
- Mark 7:20-23 NIV -
The Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
"I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
- Genesis 4:9 NIV -
An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels. Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions
- Proverbs 18:1-2
But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.
- James 3:14
No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
- 1 Corinthians 10
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
- 2 Corinthians 5:15
For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
- Philippians 2:21-22
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
- 2 Timothy 3:1-6
