Edward Payson (1783 - 1827) was born in New Hampshire. His father was the past of a Congregation Church. He studied at Harvard, graduating in 1803. He then went on to become a principal in Portland, Maine. In 1807 he became a pastor at a Congregational Church in Portland where he remained until his death.
He was famous for his sermons, of which over one hundred are collected in this work.
