Colossians 3:18-25. Wives, submit yourselves Or be subject; to your own husbands Whether they be Christians or heathen. See on Ephesians 5:22. As it is fit Both in regard of God’s command, and the evil that would arise from the neglect of this duty; in the Lord In obedience to the Lord, and in all lawful things. Husbands, love your wives As yourselves, and as Christ loved the church: see Ephesians 5:25; Ephesians 5:28. And be not bitter Harsh and rigorous, either in spirit, word,... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Colossians 3:18-25

Life in the home and in society (3:18-4:6)Harmony in the home depends on the husband’s showing understanding love to his wife, and the wife’s showing loyal submission to her husband (18-19). Children are to be obedient to their parents, but parents must treat their children with understanding and not be harsh or unreasonable (20-21). When slaves work for their masters as if they were working for the Lord Christ, they will produce work of good quality. Masters, on their part, must reward their... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Colossians 3:22

Servants, obey in all things them that are your masters according to the flesh; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord. Some commentators have supposed that, as Onesimus, a runaway slave, was bearer of this letter, Paul made the slavemaster relationship the more elaborate part of these reciprocal institutions in this epistle. There are a number of exceedingly important deductions to be made from Paul's handling of the slave problem in the New... read more

Thomas Constable

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Colossians 3:22

Paul probably made this section longer than the preceding two because he sent this epistle to Colosse with the Epistle to Philemon. Onesimus, Philemon’s run-away slave, carried them. [Note: Johnson, 482:109, 113; Lightfoot, p. 226.] Moreover there may well have been more slaves in the Colossian church than masters (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:26). The friction inherent in this situation probably called for extended comments on master-slave relationships in the body of Christ and in this church... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - Colossians 3:22-25

(22-25) Compare throughout Ephesians 6:5-9. The only peculiarity of this passage is the strong emphasis laid on “the reward of the inheritance.” “The reward” is in the original, a perfect recompense or requital. The “inheritance” is exactly that which no slave could receive; only a son could be an heir (Galatians 4:7). Hence the slave on earth is recognised as a son in heaven. He “serves the Lord,” but his service is the perfect freedom of sonship. read more
