Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Hosea 11:12

Hosea 11:12. Ephraim compasseth me about with lies Ephraim and Israel are hypocrites; they promise much and perform nothing; they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. But Judah yet ruleth with God Judah kept close to that kingly government which God had settled in David’s family, and faithfully observed those ordinances which God had given to his people, here termed saints, as they are also Deuteronomy 33:3; and else where a holy nation, and peculiar people.... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Hosea 11:12

Deceit and wilfulness (11:12-12:14)Israel’s political agreements with foreign nations, whether concerning trade or defence, are unlawful in God’s eyes. They are based on lies and dishonesty (11:12-12:1).Such deceit has been a characteristic of Israel from the time of the nation’s forefather, Jacob (the original Israel). From birth Jacob showed a desire to get his own way. As an adult he struggled even with God. Only when he was forced finally to give in did he win the blessing he so eagerly... read more

Ephraim compasseth Me, &c. The Structure (p. 1221) shows the change of subject in Hosea 11:12 Hosea 12:8 , which is "incorrigibility". The chapters are badly divided here. with deceit. Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Hosea 11:12

"Ephraim compasseth me about with falsehood, and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the Holy One."The big problem with this verse lies in the fact of Judah's being an essential part of "the house of Israel" which is identified with "deceit" in almost the same sentence. Uncertainties in the text are evidently responsible for the difficulty. Mauchline translated the last sentence of this verse thus:Judah is still wayward with God, And is faithful... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Hosea 11:12

12. MAURER joins this verse with the twelfth chapter. But as this verse praises Judah, whereas Hosea 12:2 censures him, it must belong rather to the eleventh chapter and a new prophecy begins at the twelfth chapter. To avoid this, MAURER translates this verse as a censure, "Judah wanders with God," that is, though having the true God, he wanders after false gods. ruleth with God—to serve God is to reign. Ephraim wished to rule without God (compare 1 Corinthians 4:8); nay, even, in order to... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Hosea 11:12

This is Hosea 11:1 of chapter 12 in the Hebrew Bible. The Lord complained that Ephraim (Israel) had consistently lied and tried to deceive Him. He described Himself as surrounded and under attack by His own people. Wherever He looked all He saw was cheaters. Deception (Heb. mirmah, unfaithfulness) had also marked Israel’s ancestor, Jacob (cf. Hosea 12:3-4; Hosea 12:12; Genesis 27:35). But the kingdom of Judah had also been unruly (Heb. rud, wayward) in its relationship with the Holy One (cf.... read more

1. The deceitfulness of Israel 11:12-12:14Several comparisons of Israel and the patriarch Jacob point out the deceitfulness of the Northern Kingdom in this apparent mosaic of messages. Israel had cheated on its covenant with Yahweh. The form of the passage is again that of a lawsuit in which the Lord brought charges against Israel (the rib oracle) and concluded by announcing its doom. read more
