The Pulpit Commentary - John 17:24

Heaven. Notice— I. HEAVEN AS A PLACE . 1. It is a place . 2. It is a place where Jesus is and the redeemed will be . "Where I am," etc. If so, we conclude: 3. It is a place the chief glory of which is Jesus . In itself, its occupations and surroundings, it must be specially glorious; but its chief glory is Christ. As the place where he is, it is most attractive even to those who know most about it. Few, if any, knew as much of its local glories as Paul;... read more

I will - This expression, though it commonly denotes command, is here only expressive of desire. It is used in prayer, and it was not the custom of the Saviour to use language of command when addressing God. It is often used to express strong and earnest desire, or a pressing and importunate wish, such as we are exceedingly anxious should not be denied, Mark 6:25; Mark 10:35; Matthew 12:38; Matthew 15:28.Where I am - In heaven. The Son of God was still in the bosom of the Father, John 1:18. See... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - John 17:1-26

148. Jesus’ prayer (John 17:1-26)Having announced his victory over the world (see John 16:33), Jesus now offers a prayer that reflects the triumph of his completed work. He begins by speaking of his relationship with the Father. Jesus’ work was to reveal God to the world so that people might receive eternal life through him. He prays that by dying on the cross and successfully finishing his work, he will bring glory to his Father. At the same time, his death will bring glory to himself, for it... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - John 17:24

24-26. Father, I will—The majesty of this style of speaking is quite transparent. No petty criticism will be allowed to fritter it away in any but superficial or perverted readers. be with me where I am—(See on John 17:1). that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me—(See on John 17:1- :). Christ regards it as glory enough for us to be admitted to see and gaze for ever upon His glory! This is "the beatific vision"; but it shall be no mere vision, for "we shall be like Him, because we... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - John 17:24

Here Jesus’ request clearly included the Eleven with all the elect. He wanted them all to observe (Gr. theorosin) the glory that the Father would restore to the Son following His ascension (John 17:5; cf. 1 John 3:2). This appears to be a reference to Jesus’ essential preexistent glory. His humiliation in the Incarnation was only temporary. Glorification will begin for Christians initially at death or the Rapture, whichever comes first (cf. John 14:2-3; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8). Our glorification... read more
