The Pulpit Commentary - Joshua 10:28

And that day, i.e; the day of the battle of Beth-horon. Not only did Joshua smite his enemies "unto Makkedah," but the incarceration of the kings in a cave at Makkedah showed that in the headlong flight of the enemy, Makkedah, which though not mentioned by name among the cities of the confederation, was no doubt, to a certain extent, implicated in it. It is worthy of remark that while Libnah, Debir, and Makkedah are mentioned among the cities destroyed in this campaign, though they are not... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Joshua 10:29

All Israel. The expression is not to be pressed in a literal sense. "All Israel" is simply equivalent to "all his disposable troops." Libnah . This belonged to the lowlands of Palestine. See note on Joshua 9:1 ; also Joshua 15:42 . It became a Levitical city. It revolted from Judah in the reign of Joram ( 2 Kings 8:22 ). It seems to have returned to its allegiance, since we find it not included in the conquest of Israel by Shalmaneser, while, on the other hand, it undergoes a siege... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Joshua 10:29

Libnah - The word means “white” or “distinct,” and undoubtedly points to some natural feature of the spot, perhaps the “Garde Blanche” of the Crusaders, a castle which stood on or near the white cliffs which bound the plain of Philistia to the east opposite to Ascalon. It was in the southern part of the hill-country of Judah Joshua 15:42, and was one of the cities afterward assigned to the priests Joshua 21:13. read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Joshua 10:27-29

Joshua 10:27-29. They took them down That neither wild beasts might come to devour them, nor any of their people to give them honourable burial. Thus, that which they thought would have been their shelter was made their prison first, and then their grave. So shall we surely be disappointed, in whatever we flee to from God. And that day On which the sun stood still. Nor is it strange that so much work was done, and places so far distant were taken in one day, when the day was so long, and... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Joshua 10:1-43

Victory in southern Canaan (10:1-43)The five kings who between them controlled much of southern Canaan saw Joshua’s control of Gibeon as a threat to their security. They decided to conquer Gibeon and so stop any further move south by Israel (10:1-5).Joshua faced his biggest battle thus far. He knew that it would be a life-or-death struggle, but God encouraged him with the assurance of victory (6-8). God then helped make victory possible by causing some unusual changes in the weather that were... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Joshua 10:28

"And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof; he utterly destroyed them and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king Jericho."Somewhat of a summary of Joshua's Southern Campaign is given in the rest of this chapter, where there is a great deal of abbreviation. Many have pointed out that, "Joshua's strategy at this point consisted of a series of swift,... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Joshua 10:29

"And Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah: and Jehovah delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did unto the king thereof as he had done unto the king of Jericho."Lilley defended this summary as being as good as any that could have been presented for the whole Southern Campaign.[36] Of course, the "summary" is not complete;... read more
