11. This verse qualifies the sentiment, Ecclesiastes 9:7-9. Earthly "enjoyments," however lawful in their place ( :-), are to give way when any work to be done for God requires it. Reverting to the sentiment ( :-), we ought, therefore, not only to work God's work "with might" (Ecclesiastes 9:10), but also with the feeling that the event is wholly "in God's hand" (Ecclesiastes 9:1). race . . . not to the swift— (2 Samuel 18:23); spiritually (Zephaniah 3:19; Romans 9:16). nor . . . battle to . .... read more
2. The future of the wise on earth 9:11-10:11Solomon’s emphasis in Ecclesiastes 9:2-10 was on the fact that a righteous person could not be more certain of his or her earthly future than the wicked. In Ecclesiastes 9:11 to Ecclesiastes 10:11, his point was that the wise cannot be more sure of his or her earthly future than the fool. read more
Wisdom does not guarantee a good job or a prosperous future. Likewise, sometimes the fastest runner does not win a foot race and the stronger army does not win a battle. Usually the best succeed, but not always. The reason for this is that everyone is subject to misfortune that we cannot anticipate or control (Ecclesiastes 9:12). read more

Nor in Pleasure:Ecclesiastes 9:7-12Imagine, then, a Jew brought to the bitter pass which Coheleth has described. He has acquainted himself with wisdom, native and foreign; and wisdom has led him to conclusions of virtue. Nor is he of those who love virtue as they love music-without practicing it. Believing that a righteous and religious carriage of himself will ensure happiness and equip him to encounter the problems of life, he has striven to be good and pure, to offer his sacrifices and pay... read more

THE RACE IS NOT TO THE SWIFT; NOR THE BATTLE TO THE STRONG"I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth... read more
