Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Genesis 48:20-22

"And he blessed them that day, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh; and he set Ephraim before Manasseh. And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die, but God will be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. Moreover, I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow."The blessing was concluded; and it may be inferred that Joseph accepted it as coming from God, and as not being due to any... read more

Genesis 48:22. Which I took out of the hand of the Amorite— Where are many particulars in the lives of the patriarchs, and of others, which are not related at all in Scripture; and there are some instances of a transient reference to facts of this kind, to things which have been said and done, but are never related. See ch. Genesis 36:24.Deuteronomy 2:9; Deuteronomy 2:9. Joshua 24:11.Acts 20:35; Acts 20:35. Of this sort, I apprehend, is the present passage; at least, we have no mention in... read more

22. moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren—This was near Shechem (Genesis 33:18; John 4:5; also Joshua 16:1; Joshua 20:7). And it is probable that the Amorites, having seized upon it during one of his frequent absences, the patriarch, with the united forces of his tribe, recovered it from them by his sword and his bow. read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Genesis 48:21-22

Jacob’s announcement of Joseph’s birthright 48:21-22Jacob (Israel, the prince with God) firmly believed God’s promise to bring his descendants back into the Promised Land (cf. Genesis 46:4). Jacob’s prophetic promise to Joseph (Genesis 48:22) is a play on words. The word for "portion" means ridge or shoulder (of land) and is the same as "Shechem." Shechem lay in Manasseh’s tribal territory. The Israelites later distributed the land among the tribes (Joshua 24:1) and buried Joseph at Shechem... read more

John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - Genesis 48:1-22

Jacob Blesses Manasseh and Ephraim, the Sons of JosephHe adopts them as his own sons with privileges equal to the others, thus making them heads of distinct tribes. By so doing he gives to Joseph, the eldest son of Rachel, whom he probably regarded as his true wife, the position of firstborn with a double portion of his inheritance. From the time of Moses we find Ephraim and Manasseh giving their names to tribes (Numbers 1), which received territory on the conquest of Canaan.3. Luz] or Bethel:... read more

(22) One portion.—Heb., one Shechem. In favour of this being the town of Shechem is the fact that it did belong to Jacob (Genesis 37:12, where see Note); also that Joseph’s embalmed body was deposited there (see Joshua 24:32, where the land is said to have been bought for a hundred kesitas); and, lastly, the testimony of John 4:5, where a parcel of ground at Sychar, close to Shechem, is identified with the ground given by Jacob to Joseph. On the other hand, one Shechem is an unnatural way of... read more

THE BLESSINGS OF THE TRIBESGenesis 48:1-22; Genesis 49:1-33JACOB’S blessing of his sons marks the close of the patriarchal dispensation. Henceforth the channel of God’s blessing to man does not consist of one person only, but of a people or nation. It is still one seed, as Paul reminds us, a unit that God will bless, but this unit is now no longer a single person-as Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob-but one people, composed of several parts, and yet one whole: equally representative of Christ, as the... read more
