Luke 23:32-34. There were also two other malefactors This should rather be rendered, Two others, who were malefactors, were also led with him to be put to death. 158. The crucifixion (Matthew 27:33-44; Mark 15:22-32; Luke 23:32-43; John 19:18-24)Golgotha, the place of Jesus’ crucifixion, was a hill beside a main road just outside Jerusalem. The procession arrived there about 9 a.m. (Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:25). (It is difficult to calculate the exact times of all the incidents that took place on the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. People in those days did not carry clocks, and the times given in the Gospels are only approximate. In some cases the writers may... read more

And there were also two others, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. This was Pilate's doing, and was probably designed as an insult to the Jews who would not have been favorable to such executions in such proximity to their great Passover (that night); but God overruled this vengeful deed of the governor in the fulfillment of prophecy. "He was numbered with the transgressors," and "he made his grave with the wicked" (Isaiah 53:12,9). read more
And when they came unto the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand and the other on the left.THE CRUCIFIXIONNone of the Gospel writers dwelt upon the horrors of the terrible death; and perhaps their restraint should be a caution to all people. The crucifixion of the Christ had been prophesied the better part of a millenium before it occurred, in Psalms 22, at a point in history when such a means of execution had never been invented.... read more

1. Events on the way to Golgotha 23:26-32Luke omitted reference to the Roman soldiers’ mockery and flogging of Jesus (Matthew 27:27-30; Mark 15:16-19). Perhaps he wanted to connect the Jews’ call for Jesus’ crucifixion and the crucifixion itself as closely as he could. This arrangement of the facts has the effect of heightening the innocence of Jesus and the guilt of those who demanded His execution. read more
