If the Son ... - The Son of God - heir of all things - who is forever with God, and who has therefore the right and power to liberate men from their thraldom.Shall make you free - Shall deliver you from the bondage and dominion of sin.Free indeed - Truly and really free. You shall be blessed with the most valuable freedom; not from the chains and oppressions of earthly masters and monarchs, but from the bondage of sin. read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - John 8:33-36

John 8:33-36. They answered him Namely, the other Jews that were present, not those that believed, as appears by the whole tenor of the conversation; We be Abraham’s seed A person always free, and a peculiar favourite of Heaven; and were never in bondage to any man A bold, notorious untruth. At that very time they were in bondage to the Romans, and their ancestors had been slaves, first in Egypt, and afterward in Assyria and Babylon. How sayest thou, Ye shall be made free Upon... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - John 8:31-59

91. True freedom; true sonship (John 8:31-59)Jesus used an illustration from slavery to show the people how he could help them in their need. They all knew that slaves could not free themselves. The only person who could free them was the owner of the house in which the slave worked, or the owner’s son, acting on his father’s authority. The Jews were slaves, in bondage to sin and unable to free themselves. The only one who could free them was God, acting through his Son Jesus. They would find... read more

Jesus answered them., Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.Political freedom Jesus did not bring; but he brought a far more important spiritual freedom. Thus Jesus tried to relieve their error. read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - John 8:35

And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever. This is a reminder to sinners all that the penalty of sin is death. Bondservants of sin that men are, their days in the house of flesh are limited. This introduced another element of the bondage from which the truth makes free, the bondage of our mortality. Hendriksen saw an additional implication:The old dispensation with its special privileges for Israel has ended. Abraham's true children will remain in his... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - John 8:36

If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. The Pharisees had claimed to be Abraham's seed; but they were merely his fleshly descendants; and the truth Christ was presenting is that to be truly Abraham's "spiritual" seed, they would have to be "in Christ," or "in the Son," and thus reckoned a part of the "seed" singular (Galatians 3:16). Until they accepted Christ, their status would continue to be that of the slave and not that of a son of Abraham. read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - John 8:34

John 8:34. Whosoever committeth sin, &c.— Ποιει αμαρτιαν, doeth, or practiseth sin: to do, in the Hebrew dialect, imports not the present act only, but the habit of doing. Hence some render this, Whosoever practises sin, is the servant, Δουλος, the slave of sin.—There are no greater slaves than those who give themselves up to a vicious kind of life, and to the gratification of their sinful appetites. See Romans 6:16. 2 Peter 2:19. read more
