The first psalm in this lesson suggests Psalms 74:0 on which we did not dwell, but both of which depict the desolations of Judah by the Babylonians (compare Jeremiah 52:12-14 ). On this supposition their date would be that of the captivity, and their author a later Asaph than the Asaph mentioned in David’s time. Psalms 80:0 Has captivity features also. Some would say it relates to the ten tribes, as the preceding psalm does to Judah. The next several psalms are much alike in this respect and... read more
I do not presume to speak decidedly upon this, or any other part of the divine word. As one indeed treading holy ground, I would put off the shoes from my feet. But I would humbly ask, is not this call upon the church twice repeated with only a little variation, in conformity to the plan of adoration observed above? Did not Isaiah; did not the beloved John behold somewhat of these glorious acts of adoration and praise? See Isaiah 6:1-3 , and Revelation 4:2 , to the end. Reader! what can more... read more
Not. St. Jerome seems to have read lu for lo, and translates, "and we are his," which Houbigant follows. But the Vulgate gives a very necessary instruction, as some might perhaps forget that God preserves their life every instant, (Berthier) and some have foolishly imagined, that the collection of things might give existence, or be eternal. 1-5 God governs the world by his providence, governs the church by his grace, and both by his Son. The inhabitants of the earth have cause to tremble, but the Redeemer still waits to be gracious. Let all who hear, take warning, and seek his mercy. The more we humble ourselves before God, the more we exalt him; and let us be thus reverent, for he is holy. read more
Praise of the Messiah, the Thrice Holy. The psalmist, in this hymn of praise which fits so well into this series, sets forth the merciful government of God, particularly as exercised in and for His Church, in the work of the Messiah. v. 1. The Lord reigneth, Jehovah the Messiah is King; let the people tremble, venturing into His presence only with awe and reverence; He sitteth between the cherubim, the space between the outstretched wings of the golden cherubim on the mercy-seat being the... read more
Psalms 99:01 The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble:He sitteth between the cherubim; let the earth be moved.2 The Lord is great in Zion; And he is high above all the people.3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name; For it is holy.4 The king’s strength also loveth judgment;Thou dost establish equity,Thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.5 Exalt ye the Lord our God,And worship at his footstool; For he is holy.6 Moses and Aaron among his priests,And... read more
Worship the Great and Holy One Psalms 99:1-9 This psalm has its counterpart in Psalms 97:1-12 . There Jehovah’s reign is associated with the gladness of faith; here with the trembling of mortal and sinful hearts. Thrice we are reminded that He is holy, Psalms 99:3 ; Psalms 99:5 ; Psalms 99:9 . This threefold ascription of earth concerning the holiness of God answers the threefold ascription of heaven, where one seraph cries to the rest, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the... read more
This is a song of the Kingdom of Jehovah as founded upon and administered in holiness. There are three distinct parts, each ending with practically the same refrain. The first acclaims the King enthroned (vv. Psa 99:1-3 ). The second affirms the absolute integrity of His administration (vv. Psa 99:4-5 ). The third declares the constant and faithful guidance of His own representatives (vv. Psa 99:6-9 ). In each there is a call to the attitude of response to the fact declared. The enthroned... read more

Psalms 99:0 The Reign of Righteousness 1. His throne (Psalms 99:1-3 ) 2. Judgment and righteousness executed (Psalms 99:4-6 ) 3. His gracious dealings (Psalms 99:7-9 ) It is a Psalm of the righteous government. The Lord who reigns is holy, demands obedience. He is holy and must be worshipped. Moses and Aaron were His priests in the past and Samuel among them that called upon His Name. He dealt graciously with His people in the past and forgave them, and the same Lord now reigneth and... read more
