DISCOURSE: 248THE TAKING OF JERICHOJoshua 6:20-21. So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pats, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. Chapter 6So in chapter six we begin the conquering of the land. The method by which they took Jericho was very fascinating indeed. The Lord said to Joshua, I have given to you the city of Jericho, and its king, and his mighty men. Now you're to encircle the city, all of your men of war. You're to walk around the city once, and you're to do this for six days. And the seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and on the seventh day ye shall circle the city seven times,... read more

Sutcliffe's Commentary on the Old and New Testaments - Joshua 6:1-27

Joshua 6:4 . Seven trumpets of rams’ horns. Josephus uses this term, “rams’ horns:” but in most versions it is holy trumpets, or trumpets used in the Jubilee, as seems to be implied by the Hebrew word Jobel. Joshua 6:10 . Ye shall not shout. Men are apt to shout in war, and animals raise their cries when they fight. Joshua 6:21 . They utterly destroyed young and old. Moses commanded them in future wars to spare the women and the little ones, when storming a city. Deuteronomy 20:14.... read more

Joshua 6:12-27The wall fell down flat. The fight of faithOf uninspired poems, perhaps the most widely read are those which celebrate a siege--the siege of Troy. Homer and Virgil have sung in noble numbers the praises of the heroes in that world-renowned fight. Their qualities, deeds, reverses, successes, as thus recorded, will live as long as such poetry has a charm for the human mind. But, after all, the principles which animated Agamemnon, Ajax, Achilles, Nestor, Ulysses, and others of these... read more

Daniel Whedon

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - Joshua 6:20

20. So the people shouted The trumpets gave the signal and then the people shouted. The trumpets had been silent during the speech of Joshua, (Joshua 6:17-19,) then came the signal, and the war-cry, and the downfall. How vain the attempt of some to strip this event of the miraculous by ascribing it to an earthquake! How came Joshua to know that an earthquake would occur at that particular juncture? Such knowledge would be a greater miracle. Equally untenable is the theory that the walls... read more
