F. B. Hole's Old and New Testament Commentary - Matthew 27:1-99

Matthew 27 THE CLOSING SCENES of the Lord’s life are told by Matthew in a way that emphasizes the excessive guilt of the leaders of Israel. This feature has been noticeable all through, and we specially see it in Matthew 23.0 . The opening verses of this chapter show us that though His official condemnation had to come from Pilate, yet the animus that hounded Him to His death was found with them. The sequence of the story is broken by a parenthetical paragraph giving us the miserable end of... read more

the Closed and Guarded Tomb Matthew 27:57-66 Fear not to entrust yourself to God in death. If you yield up your spirit and commend it to the Father’s hands, He will provide for it and for your body also. He has His Josephs everywhere. He will provide loving hands for the body, which was the shrine and casket of the precious jewel that He bought at so great a cost. Precious in His sight is the death of His saints, Psalms 116:15 . The kings and princes of this world set themselves to guard... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Matthew 27:1-66

The morning saw the plot hatched in the night carried into effect. This is chronicled in the first two verses of the chapter. The picture of Judas in his remorse is very terrible. Pilate stands out as a warning against the policy of expediency. He was convinced of the innocence of Jesus, and his conscience- perhaps more acute that day than it had been for a very long time- very plainly revealed to him that his duty lay in releasing the Prisoner. However, he endeavored to secure himself and... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:55-61

The Body Of Jesus Is Rescued From Ignominy And Buried In A Rich Man’ Tomb (27:55-61). Matthew now brings out that God had made His own funeral arrangements for His Son, as He had revealed beforehand. As Isaiah had said, ‘They made His grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in His death’ (Isaiah 53:9). And while the faithful women disciples watched from afar (they would not have been seen as under the same threat as the Apostles), waiting for an opportunity to pay their respects to Jesus’... read more

Jesus Body Is Laid In A Splendid Tomb; The Chief Priests And Pharisees Seal The Tomb And Put A Guard On It So As To Keep Him There; An Angel Opens The Tomb To Reveal That Jesus Has Risen (27:55-28:6). In this subsection we have centrally a picture of the vain arrangements of men by which they hope to thwart God and prevent Jesus from rising, while on one side of this we have God’s arrangement for His Son to have a splendid new tomb, and on the other God’s arrangement to open that tomb so as to... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:57

‘And when even was come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple,’ ‘When evening was come.’ This is probably simply indicating that it was becoming dark. In Jewish eyes it was necessary for the bodies of the three to be taken down from their crosses before nightfall and disposed of in order to prevent bringing a curse on the land (Deuteronomy 21:23 was seen as applying to crucifixion). It was also necessary to do it before the Sabbath. This man... read more

Matthew 27:57-2 Peter : . The Burial of Jesus ( Mark 15:42-2 Corinthians : *, Luke 23:50-Titus :).— Mt. is the briefest of the three; he omits Pilate’ s inquiry of the centurion (which Mk. gives) and the description of Joseph (Mk., Lk.). He simply calls him “ a rich man, Jesus’ disciple.” Perhaps he thought that by calling him “ a councilor” he might be grouping him with those who condemned Jesus; “ a rich man” may be a reminiscence of Isaiah 53:9. read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 27:57-61

Mark hath it, Mark 15:42-47, And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. And he bought... read more
