Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 8:22

‘But Jesus says to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.” Jesus’ reply is that the man must be willing to immediately turn his back on his family life and follow Jesus. The dead can be left to look after their own dead. Here ‘the dead’ is unquestionably figurative in at least one of its uses, for the dead could not literally bury the dead. It therefore refers at least partly, to the dead in soul. What Jesus therefore probably means is that in following Him the man will... read more

Matthew 8:18-Song of Solomon : . Aspirants to Discipleship ( Luke 9:57-1 Peter :).— Mt. here breaks away from Mk.’ s order, omitting Mark 1:35-Zechariah :, and giving as the sequel to Jesus’ first stay at Capernaum what Mk. ( Mark 4:35 to Mark 5:20) makes the sequel to the second stay. Mark 2:1 to Mark 4:34 (following on the first stay) is given by Mt. in chs. 9, 11f. Where Mk. ( Mark 4:35) and Lk. ( Luke 8:22) have an invitation, Mt. (Matthew 18) has a command. Lk.’ s account of (three)... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 8:21-22

Luke repeating the same history, Luke 9:59,Luke 9:60, saith that Christ said to this man, Follow me. He replies, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father; to live at home with my father, who is an old man, till I have performed my last filial office to him in burying him. Others think that he was already dead, and that this disciple would not have begged leave for so uncertain a time. Christ saith unto him, Follow me; not that our Lord disapproved the decent manner of burying the dead,... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 8:18-22

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 8:18. To depart.—Thus Jesus sought repose, and gave to the people time to bear fruit from His teaching, and kindled their interest in Himself for the future (Bengel).Matthew 8:20. Nests = shelter, roosts, or lodging places (R.V. margin). The Son of man.—The origin of this expression as a Messianic title is found in Daniel 7:13. Hence to the Jews it would be a familiar designation of the Messiah—the King whose “everlasting dominion” is described in the next verse (Daniel... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Matthew 8:22

Matthew 8:22 It was the answer of our Lord to one of His disciples, possibly as an old tradition tells us, to the Apostle Philip, who, before following Him, wished to go and bury his father. The extreme urgency of the command is plain, nor is its meaning mistakable: "Thou art living in a world of natural and of spiritual death; thou art called to a kingdom of life. Let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead. Follow thou Me." I. And whither then must we follow Christ? In spirit, if not in... read more

Matthew 8:19-22Master, I will follow Thee.Impetuous and hesitating discipleshipI. The significance of Christ’s treatment of the impetuous scribe. He declares his determination to follow Christ, lead where He may. Christ checks rather than encourages the man. We may regard the determination of the scribe as-the resolution of an unreflecting emotionalist, and an ambitious worldling. Our Lord’s words have important applications in our own day.II. The suggestiveness of Christ’s treatment of the... read more
