Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Daniel 9:27

Daniel 9:27. And he shall confirm the covenant with many “The covenant to be confirmed by the Messiah is not a civil, but a religious compact, as such, styled by Daniel himself, the holy covenant, Daniel 11:28; Daniel 11:30; Daniel 11:32, the covenant of grace; which, after the infraction of the first divine law of strict obedience, was, of mere clemency, granted to all mankind by the mediation of Christ. He not only expiated the sins of the world by his death, which was the chief article... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Daniel 9:1-23

Daniel’s prayer (9:1-23)Persia conquered Babylon in 539 BC and Darius was placed in charge of the newly conquered territory (see 5:31). The Jews’ seventy years captivity in Babylon, which Jeremiah had predicted, was now almost complete, and Daniel looked for their return to their homeland (9:1-2; see Jeremiah 29:10). But he knew that repentance was necessary if they were to enjoy God’s blessing, and therefore he came to God in prayer on behalf of his people (3).Casting himself and his people... read more

And he informed me . The Syriac reads "Yea, he came". to give thee skill, &c . = to teach thee understanding, or to make thee wise as to, &c. Note the special emphasis as to the admonition for ourselves in the Structures below. Seventy weeks = Seventy sevens: i.e. of years. Not on any "yearday" theory. If "days" had been intended, it would be so expressed, as in Daniel 10:3 (compare Leviticus 25:8 ). Moreover, "years" had been the subject of Daniel's prayer (Daniel 9:2 ). The last "seven" is "one", and it is divided in half in Daniel 9:27 , and the half is three and a half years (Daniel 7:25 ; Compare Daniel 8:11-14 ; Daniel 11:33 ). In Revelation 11:2 this half is expressed by "forty-two months"; and in the next... read more

after threescore and two weeks . The definite Article here marks this period, as the one just mentioned in Daniel 9:24 , i.e. after the 483 years. How long "after" is not stated; but it must surely be either immediately or very soon after the Messiah was thus presented and proclaimed in and to Jerusalem as the Prince. The decree was issued in the month of Nisan, the same month as the events in Matthew 21:1 Matthew 26:61 . Compare Zechariah 9:9 . Luke 19:41-44 ("this thy day"). threescore and... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Daniel 9:20

"And while I was speaking and praying, and confessing my sin, and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God; yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he instructed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding. At the... read more

"Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: it shall be built again, with... read more
