Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - Joshua 5:1-9

A vast show, no doubt, the numerous camp of Israel made in the plains of Jericho, where now they had pitched their tents. Who can count the dust of Jacob? That which had long been the church in the wilderness has now come up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved, and looks forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners. How terrible she was in the eyes of her enemies we are here told, Josh. 5:1. How fair and clear she was made in the eyes... read more

John Gills Exposition of the Bible Commentary - Joshua 5:6

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness ,.... Wanting a few days, the round number is given: not forty two, as the Septuagint version: till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt , were consumed ; all that were above twenty years of age, excepting Joshua and Caleb: because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord ; but murmured against him, and against his servants, and particularly against Aaron, being the high priest; and chiefly... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Joshua 5:1-9

The great renewal of the covenant. Matthew Henry very felicitously quotes here and combines the two passages (So Matthew 8:5 and Matthew 6:10 ), "Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved, who looks forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?" Terrible as an army in the eyes of her enemies (verse 1); fair as the moon, clear as the sun, when the reproach of Egypt is rolled away (verse 9). I. ISRAEL ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Joshua 5:6

Till all the people. The Hebrew here is גוֹּי , not the usual word for people, but that usually applied to the Gentiles (equivalent to ἔθνος , by which word it is usually rendered in the LXX ). It is applied to the Israelites in Joshua 3:17 ; Joshua 4:1 ; Isaiah 1:4 ; Isaiah 9:2 ; Isaiah 26:2 . See also Exodus 33:13 . In the singular it means a people in the more general sense, a nation, as distinguished from a people in whom one has an interest. In the plural it... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Joshua 5:6-11

The Two Sacraments of the Old Covenant Circumcision and the passover were the two sacraments of the old covenant. The first set forth the truth that enrolment among the people of God must be accompanied with the putting away of evil. The second represented the past deliverance from the bondage of Egypt, and the future deliverance from all the perils of the wilderness by entrance into Canaan, and the final possession of the land of promise. On the eve of the decisive conflict, God commands... read more

Of the whole nation those only were already circumcised at the time of the passage of the Jordan who had been under twenty years of age at the time of the complaining and consequent rejection at Kadesh (compare the marginal reference). These would have been circumcised before they left Egypt, and there would still survive of them more than a quarter of a million of thirty-eight years old and upward. The statements of these verses are of a general kind. The “forty years” of Joshua 5:6 is a round... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Joshua 5:6

Joshua 5:6. Till all the people were consumed All the six hundred thousand fighting men that came out of Egypt, except Joshua and Caleb. The Hebrew word הגוי , hagoi, here rendered people, commonly signifies the Gentiles, and some have thought it is here used to signify that they were unworthy the name of Israelites. That he would not show them the land That is, would not give them so much as the sight of it, which he granted to Moses, much less the possession. read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Joshua 5:2-15

Camp at Gilgal (5:2-15)Israel’s camp at Gilgal became the centre for the battle campaign that was to follow. But before the people could receive the land God promised them in the covenant, they had to renew their covenant relation with him.During the previous forty years, the people of Israel had brought shame upon themselves through consistently being disobedient and unbelieving. They had even neglected the first requirement of the covenant, which was the circumcision of all newborn male... read more
