as = according as.
He gave , &c. Quoted from Psalms 78:24 . This was their hope and belief; and this was the "sign "looked for in "the days of Messiah". So the Midrash (a Commentary on Ecc.): "The former Redeemer [Moses] caused manna to descend for them; in like manner shall our latter Redeemer [Messiah] cause manna to come down, as it is written: ' There shall be a handful of corn in the earth' (Psalms 72:16 ).
