Introduction
A.M. 3409. B.C. 595.
This, and the following chapter, contain a large description of the downfall of Babylon, and the empire of which that city was the seat; intermixed and contrasted with predictions concerning the redemption of Israel and Judah, who were not, like their oppressors, to be finally extirpated, but to survive them, and upon their repentance and conversion to be pardoned and restored. This prophecy follows the rest of those delivered by Jeremiah against the neighbouring countries, according to the method of God’s judgments laid down before, chap. Jeremiah 25:12-13 , where the prophet declares, that after Nebuchadnezzar and his successors had fulfilled God’s purposes, in being executioners of his vengeance upon other countries, they themselves should drink of the same cup. We have in this chapter,
(1,) The ruin of Babylon, Jeremiah 50:1-3 ; and again, Jeremiah 50:9-16 ; and again, Jeremiah 50:21-32 ; and again, Jeremiah 50:35-46 .
(2,) The redemption of God’s people, Jeremiah 50:4-8 ; and again, Jeremiah 50:17-20 ; and again, Jeremiah 50:33 , Jeremiah 50:34 .
