To engage the Corinthians to cultivate Christian love, as more excellent and important than any of those gifts, on the possession of which they were so ready to value themselves, and about which they contended for pre-eminence, the apostle,
(1,) Shows its indispensable necessity; no gifts, no acts of beneficence, not even martyrdom itself, being of any real advantage without it, 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 .
(2,) He gives a lovely description of it, displaying its transcendent excellence and useful properties and effects, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 .
(3,) Points out its perpetual duration, in which it exceeds even the graces of faith and hope, 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 .
