Garments were "rent," not only as a sign of mourning, but whenever persons were shocked or horrified (see Genesis 37:29 ; 1 Samuel 4:12 ; 2 Samuel 1:2 ; Ezra 9:3 ; 2 Chronicles 34:19 ; Matthew 26:65 ). The Jewish officials meant to mark their horror at Rabshakeh's blasphemies.
