33. Feared the Lord, and served their own gods This was no inconsistency for them, as it would have been in a true Israelite, who recognised no god but Jehovah. It was the manner, that is, the judgment, the common opinion of the nations represented by these colonists, that in settling in a new country they should acknowledge and fear the god of that country no less than the deities of their native land. Whom they carried away from thence Rather, whence they carried them away, or, whence they had been carried away.
