Monastery formerly occupying a small island of the Inner Hebrides, west of Scotland; founded in 563, by Saint Columba. It soon became one of the most important centers of Celtic Christianity and culture; it is thought that the Book of Kells was written there. Iona was the mother-house of many monasteries in Britain and Ireland. Early in the 13th century the old Celtic monastery was replaced by Benedictine monasteries for men and for women; these were confiscated, 1561, by order of the Convention of Estates.
