(1646-1705) 13th Governor of New France, born Cherbourg, France. Appointed governor of Montreal 1684, at the request of the Sulpicians, he aided Frontenac in saving New France from the Iroquois, and succeeded him as governor, 1698. He is celebrated for the treaty with the Iroquois, drawn up at Montreal, 1701.
