(Greek: the sea)
In ancient times, a northeast province of Asia Minor, a long and narrow strip of land on the south coast of the Black Sea. Christianity was introduced here in Apostolic times, the First Epistle of Peter being addressed to the Christians in Pontus, and others (1 Peter 1) inhabitants of this province were present at Pentecost (Acts 2).
