Ancient diocese, founded as the Diocese of Man, possibly by Saint Patrick, 5th century, and including the Scottish Isles until the 14th, whence Sodor or Suthr-Eyar (Southern Isles). In 1542 the see was transferred to the Province of York. The last Catholic bishop was Thomas Stanley. The present Anglican diocese includes the entire Isle of Man.
