Organization founded by Mary Virginia Merrick, in Washington, DC, 1891, to care for destitute children. Its original object was to provide a gift at Christmas, or "from the Christ Child," for all poor children. In addition to this it now has numerous activities, including sewing and cooking schools, children's libraries, etc. Its headquarters are located in Washington and there are branches of the society in important cities throughout the United States.
