Lawyer and statesman, born Steuben County, New York, 1816; died Utica, New York, 1892. He held important offices in New York State, was congressman, 1863-1865; first Catholic United States Senator from the state, 1876-1882. He represented Georgetown College at the Catholic Congress of laymen at Baltimore in 1889. Received LL.D. from Georgetown.
