Embraces the fundamentals of 16th-century Protestantism as defended by modern Protestants against rationalistic modernists. Fundamentalists uphold the Bible as the sole arbiter of truth, religious and scientific, whence their activity in behalf of anti-evolution legislation. In practise the Fundamentalists do not concede their co-religionists the exercise of their professed right of privately interpreting the Scriptures. In the theological sense fundamentalism means the adherence given to the fundamentals of God's revelation, as contained in the inspired Word of God and in Divine Tradition, and as proposed by the infallible magisterium of the Church to the faithful for belief.
