Governor of New France, born Denonville, France, 1638; died 1710. He arrived at Quebec in 1685 with the special mission of subduing the Iroquois tribe, and making peace with the other Indians. Owing to the opposition of Governors Dongan of New York and Andros of New England, his efforts were in the main unsuccessful, and he was replaced by De Frontenac in 1689.
