A society of secular priests and coadjutor brothers living in community. The first archbishop of Algeria, later Cardinal Lavigerie, founded it in 1868 for the immediate care and instruction of Arab children orphaned by the famine of 1867 and the general purpose of converting all Africa; constitutions approved, 1908, and again, 1921. Not, strictly speaking, a religious order, its members lead the community life and are governed by a superior-general residing at Maison-Carree, near Algiers. The society maintains missions in the Sahara, the Sudan, Vicariates Apostolic of Northern and Southern Nyanza, Uganda, Tanganyika, Nyassa, and Upper Congo, a Greek Melchite seminary at Jerusalem, and a scholasticate at Carthage.
