Franciscan exegete, born Normandy, 1270; died Paris, France, October 1349. His "Postillae," in which he emphasizes the literal sense of Sacred Scripture, has placed him in the foremost rank of biblical scholars. The first scriptural commentary printed, it was for centuries a favorite manual and Luther owed much to it.
