Confessor; Doctor of the Church; born Nimwegen, Netherlands, 1521; died Fribourg, Switzerland, 1597. He was the second Apostle of Germany, theologian and leader of the Counter-Reformation. He studied arts, civillaw, and theology at the University of Cologne; at the instigation of Peter Faber he entered the Society of Jesus in 1543. Ordained in 1546. Studied under Ignatius at Rome. Received his doctorate in theology from Bologna. He introduced the Jesuits into Bavaria, Bohemia, Swabia, the Tyrol, and Hungary. Was employed on important missions by the Holy See. Was cathedral preacher at Augsburg, and was instrumental in procuring the erection of papal seminaries at Pragne, Fulda, Braunsberg, and Dillingen; encouraged Catholic printers and writers; wrote extensively.
