Apostle of the Franks. Archbishop of Rheims, France. Born in 437 in Cerny-en-Laonnais, France; died on January 13, 533 in Rheims. He studied literature at Rheims, and while still a layman was elected Bishop of Rheims in 459, and made his chief aim the propagation of Christianity among the Franks. He brought about the conversion of King Clovis, whom he baptized in 496. He occupied the see 94 years. He established bishoprics, consecrated bishops, and combated Arianism.
