Born in London, England on October 24, 1827; died on July 9, 1909. He succeeded his father as Earl of Ripon in 1859, and the same year became Secretary of War. During the next half century he was a member of every Liberal cabinet. Chairman of the commission which settled the Alabama Claims, he was rewarded by being made Marquess of Ripon. In 1874 he became a Catholic. He was Governor-General and Viceroy of India in 1880.
