Born in Rome, Italy; died there on January 27, 847 of natural causes. Reigned from 844 to January 27, 847. Cardinal-priest. His election was disputed by the antipope John. As pope he crowned Louis the Pious as king of the Lombards in 844. During his pontificate Rome was threatened by an attack from the Saracen pirates in 846.
