Scriptural commentator and theologian, born Gorkum, Holland, 1542; died Douai, France, 1613. He was for many years professor at Louvain where he participated in the controversy concerning the opinions of Baius, and after he had become professor of theology at Douai, 1582, in that involving Lessius. Est's greatest work is his commentary on the Epistle of Saint Paul, which no serious student of the Epistles can afford to neglect. His uncle, Nicholas Pieck, O.S.F., was one of the martyrs of Gorkum (canonized, 1867), and Est is the author of what is considered the best history of their martyrdom.
