A doctrine held by the Roman Catholics, who believe that the bishop of Rome is, uner Christ, supreme pastor of the whole church; and, as such, is not only the first bishop in order and dignity, but has also a power and jurisdiction over all Christians. This doctrine is chiefly built upon the suposed primacy of St. Peter, of whom the bishop of Rome is the pretended successor; a primacy we no where find commanded or countenanced, but absolutely prohibited, in the word of God, Luke 22:14; Luke 22:24 . Mark 9:35 .

Despite a stated reliance on the plain meaning of the Bible and the dictates of common sense, Buck's Theological Dictionary, first published in London in 1802, seeks to provide a textual basis for the evangelical community. By combining brief essays on orthodox belief and practice with historical entries on various denominations, Buck provided an interpretive lens that allowed antebellum Protestants to see Christianity's almost two millennia as their own history.Wikipedia
