A term often used in the O.T. where a city is mentioned and 'its villages,' but at times nothing more is meant than its 'suburbs,' not in the sense of separate villages. The two principal words are bath, 'daughter,' Numbers 21:25,32 , etc. and chatser, 'hamlet, encampment,' etc. Joshua 18:24,28 , etc. In the N.T. it is κώμη, 'village,' Matthew 9:35 , etc.
