Immanuel (im-măn'u-el), God with us. The name given to the child whose birth the prophet Isaiah was authorized to announce to Ahaz when the confederacy was formed by Israel and Syria against Judah. Isaiah 7:1-16. This passage has been cited by Matthew, and specially applied to the birth of Christ, Matthew 1:22-23, who is rightly regarded as "God with us" and as ever present in his church and with his people through the ages of the world.
