Swine. The flesh of the hog was strictly forbidden to the Hebrews. Leviticus 11:7; Deuteronomy 14:8. It seems to have been offered in idol-worship, and the worshipper no doubt feasted on the sacrifice. Isaiah 65:4; Isaiah 66:3; Isaiah 66:17. Wild hogs are now common on the Syrian hills; perhaps they were equally common in ancient times. Psalms 80:13. And certainly in our Lord's days the breeding of swine was common. Matthew 7:6; Matthew 8:30-34; Luke 15:15-16; 2 Peter 2:22.
