Agnellus, archbishop of Ravenna, was born in A.D. 486 of noble family, and was possessed of considerable wealth. On the death of his wife, he entered holy orders, and became praefectus of the Church of St. Agatha. He was consecrated bishop in 556, and held his bishopric until his death, in 569. In addition to efficient work in his' diocese, he wrote Epistola de Ratione Fidei ad Armenium, against Arianism. See Cave, Hist. Lit. i, 529; Rubens, list. Ravenn. iii, 169.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
