Gude, Gottlob Friedrich, a German theologian, was born at Lauban Aug. 26. 1701. He studied theology in the universities of Halle and Leipzig, and taught for some time in the latter. Having returned to his native city in 1727, he was made chief deacon in 1743, and archdeacon in 1753. He died at Lauban June 20,1756. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
