Hafeli, Johann Caspar a Protestant theologian, was born May 1, 1754, in Switzerland. He studied at Zurich, was vicar in 1773, in 1784 chaplain to the prince of Dessan, in 1793 preacher at Bremen, in 1802 professor at the gymnasium there, in 1805 superintendent at Bernburg, and died April 4, 1811. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
