La Poype (de Vert-ieu), Jean Claude De
a French prelate, was born in 1655, of an ancient family of Poitou. He became vicar to M. de St. Georges, archbishop of Lyons, and in 1702 was called to the episcopal see of Beziers. This he refused, and the same year became bishop of Poictiers. In 1716 he was one of the prelates who signed the article demanding of the pope an explanation of the bull Unigenitus. He died February 3, 1732, near Poictiers. He was in part author of an estimable work entitled, Compendiosae Institutiones Theologicae (Poictiers, 1708). John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
