Xeodoxins are a sect among the Japanese who acknowledge a future state, and believe in the immortality of the soul. Amidas is their favorite deity, and the bonzes of this sect go up and down the public streets and roads, summoning devotees by the sound of a bell, and distributing indulgences and dispensations, constantly crying in a chanting tone, "O ever blessed Amidas, have mercy upon us."

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
