Her he removed from being queen, i.e. he took from her either the name and authority of queen-regent, which she, having been Rehoboam’s wife, and Abijam’s mother, took to herself during Asa’s minority, and abused to the patronage of idolatry; or the dignity of the queen-mother, and those guards, or other ensigns of honour, or instruments of power, which, as such, she had enjoyed and misemployed. Otherwise, he removed her from the queen, i.e. from his wife, that she might not be infected by her,... read more

The high places were not removed. Object. He did take these away, 2 Chronicles 14:3. Answ. He took away those which were devoted to the worship of idols, as is there said, he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the highplaces, to wit, where they were worshipped: but as for those high places where the true God was worshipped, he did not take them away; partly, because he thought there was no great evil in them, because they had been used by David and Solomon, and other good and wise... read more

Which his father had dedicated, Abijam, to wit, when he was in distress, and going to fight with Jeroboam, 2 Chronicles 13:0 though afterwards he did not perform his vows, nor bring in what he had devoted; whether because he was prevented by death, or because he afterwards relapsed to idolatry, as may seem probable from the 12th verse of this chapter. read more

THE REIGNS OF ABIJAM, ASA, NADAB, AND BAASHACRITICAL AND EXPLANATORY NOTES.—1 Kings 15:1. CRITICAL AND EXPLANATORY NOTES.—1 Kings 15:12. The sodomites—vide Notes on 1 Kings 14:24. All the idols—גִּלּוּלִים, a word for despicable things. The Rabbins render it mud-gods; Ewald renders it doll-images; Gesenius, idol-blocks. 1 Kings 15:13. An idol in a grove—This is a word of far different meaning from that in 1 Kings 15:12. מִפְלֶצֶת means horrendum, as from the verb פלץ, to terrify, horrify. It Is conjectured that this was an obscene figure, a phallus image, a symbol of the productive... read more

Scofield's Reference Notes - 1 Kings 15:14

high places Cf. 2 Chronicles 14:3. It appears that local sacrifices to Jehovah (though not according to the divine order) were offered in the times of the kings upon "high places" (cf) 1 Samuel 9:12. Apparently Asa's mother had defiled one of these with an idol, 1 Kings 15:13. Asa destroyed the idol and the idolatrous (but not the Jehovistic) "high places." But see "high places," (See Scofield "1 Kings 15:13- :") . read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - 1 Kings 15:1-34

Chapter 15And he walked in the sins, which his father had done before him: his heart was not completely towards the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father. Nevertheless for David's sake the LORD gave him the lamp in Jerusalem, to set his son after him, and establish Jerusalem: Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded in all the days of his life, [except in the case of Bathsheba,] the matter of Uriah the Hittite... read more
