Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:50

‘And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.’ The loud cry was ‘it is finished’, followed by the quieter, “Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit.” (John 19:30; Luke 23:46). It is clear that the loud cry was remembered by all, contributing to the eeriness of the occasion. It is possible that ‘it is finished’ represented the final words of Psalms 22:0 ‘He has done it’. Certainly it was a cry of triumph that God’s purposes had been accomplished. Its importance here is... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:32-44

Matthew 27:32-Acts : . The Crucifixion ( Mark 15:21-Jonah : *, Luke 23:26-John :).— Mt. still follows Mk. clearly, the chief alterations being ( a) “ gall” ( Matthew 27:34) for “ myrrh” (this is due to Psalms 69:21, and turns a kindly act into a cruel one); ( b) Matthew 27:36; ( c) the addition of “ if thou art the SOD of God” ( Matthew 27:40); ( d) Matthew 27:43, from Psalms 22:8 and Wis_2:18 . read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:45-56

Matthew 27:45-Titus : . The Death of Jesus ( Mark 15:33-: *, Luke 23:44-Ephesians :). Matthew 27:48 f. is to be preferred to Mark 15:36. vv. Matthew 27:51-2 Thessalonians : is found only in Mt., and may have as its basis Ezekiel 37:12.— after his resurrection: a still later insertion to fit the statement that Christ was “ the first fruits of them that sleep.” We can hardly suppose that the original account of the miracle represented them as staying alive in their tombs from Friday afternoon... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 27:32-34

Mark saith, Mark 15:21-23, And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. Luke is larger in his account of the passages between his condemnation and crucifixion, Luke 23:26-32. And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a... read more

Mark saith, Mark 15:24-28, When they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And the superscription of his accusation was written over, The King of the Jews. And with him they crucified two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. Luke saith, Luke 23:33,Luke 23:34, And when they... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 27:38-44

Mark relates this part of the history with no material circumstance differing from Matthew, Matthew 15:29-32. Luke saith, Luke 23:39-43, And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? and we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember... read more

Mark hath the same, Mark 15:33-38. Luke saith, Luke 23:44, that it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. John saith no more, John 19:30, but that—he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. It is said, John 19:14, it was about the... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 27:27-34

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 27:27. The common hall.—Literally, the Prætorium, a word which, applied originally to the tent of the prætor, or general, and so to the headquarters of the camp, had come to be used with a somewhat wide range of meaning, (1) for the residence of a prince or governor; or (2) for the barracks attached to such a residence (as in Philippians 1:13); or (3) for any house as stately. Hero (as in Acts 23:35) it appears to be used in the first sense. Pilate’s dialogue with the... read more

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 27:35. That it might be fulfilled, etc.—Omitted in R.V. Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 27:45-56

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 27:45. From the sixth hour.—The first three Gospels agree as to time and fact. Assuming them to follow the usual Jewish reckoning (as in Acts 2:15; Acts 3:1; Acts 10:3; Acts 10:9) this would be noon. St. John names the “sixth hour” as the time of our Lord’s final condemnation by Pilate, following apparently (though this is questioned by many interpreters) the Roman or modern mode of reckoning from midnight to noon. Looking to the facts of the case, it is probable that our... read more
