‘What then? What Israel seeks for, that he did not obtain, but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened,’ What then are we to conclude from this? The conclusion must be that Israel as a whole failed to obtain what ‘it is seeking for’ (compare Romans 9:31; Romans 10:3). Unbelieving Israel was, and still is, seeking for a righteousness which would make it acceptable to God, but it failed in its purpose. ‘But if it is by grace, it is no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace.’ Paul then relates this back to his previous arguments in Romans 3:24; Romans 3:27-28; Romans 4:2-5; Romans 4:16; Romans 5:15-21; Romans 6:15; Romans 8:31-39. They have been chosen in accordance with the unmerited, active favour of God, without any deserving of their own.
