Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Zechariah 14:1-21

The Triumph of YHWH (Zechariah 14:1-21 ). In this final chapter Zechariah visualises the final triumph of YHWH. The whole world will be subject to Him, and will worship Him (Zechariah 14:16). He will be King over all the earth (Zechariah 14:9). The idea is of the introduction of the everlasting kingdom. At this point we need to stop and consider what was in the mind of the prophet. He was not, of course, aware of the first coming of Jesus, apart from in the general terms of a coming Servant... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Zechariah 14:3-5

The Going Forth of YHWH (Zechariah 14:3-5 a). The description of the fall of ‘Jerusalem’ is then followed by a scene which is portrayed in vivid and unforgettable colours. YHWH Himself will go forth to do battle with the nations, as He had in other days of battle, and He will stand astride the Mount of Olives on the East of Jerusalem, and that mountain will as a consequence divide in half, leaving a gulf between which will go from east to west, providing a way for men to flee from Jerusalem... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Zechariah 14:5-9

YHWH Will Come With His Holy Ones And Become King Over All The Earth (Zechariah 14:5-9 ). The progress of God’s purposes is now described. God will bring about a new work on behalf of His people, and will establish His Kingly Rule, and with Him will come a host of angels who are to be ‘ministering spirits to the heirs of salvation’ (Hebrews 1:14). Zechariah 14:5 ‘And YHWH my God will come (go), and all the holy ones with you.’ It is YHWH of Hosts Who is here, and His hosts are with Him. Just... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Zechariah 14:10-21

The Consequences of YHWH’s Reign (Zechariah 14:10-21 ). In Zechariah’s day when a king came to the throne he did not become king over a kingdom with neat boundaries and receive total control. Various rivals would be seeking to take the kingship and the boundaries would be disputed. A king ruled as far as his power went. This explains why in Israel, for example, after a long reign a following king would regularly have a short reign. His bid for power proved unsuccessful. So when a new king... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Zechariah 14:1-21

Zechariah 14. The Tribulation of the Struggle against Heathenism and the Glorious Future which may be Anticipated.— It is noteworthy that the writer considers the plundering of Jerusalem as a “ day of the Lord.” Zechariah 14:1 f. describes the affliction of Jerusalem up to the time of the Maccabæ an successes which are referred to in Zechariah 14:3. The sense of what follows is hopelessly obscure in MT and EV owing to the mispronunciation of the Heb. consonants in Zechariah 14:5. The thought... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Zechariah 14:1

Behold: here are things of very great importance, and of very mysterious nature, proposed by the Lord to us, and therefore we are called upon to attend to them. The day of the Lord, the day which the Lord hath appointed for punishing the sins of his ancient people, day of his sacrifice, Zephaniah 1:8, of vengeance, Joel 2:1,Joel 2:2. Cometh; hasteth, or will soon overtake you, O sinful, unthankful, bloody Jews, who first despised and next murdered the Messiah! Thy spoil, all thou hast, O... read more

For: this gives not the reason why, but introduceth an account how, this thing shall be done. I will gather: God will summon and bring together his army. They do it themselves by their own counsels, for their own works and ends; God also hath his work for them to do, and by his counsel and at his call they shall come. All nations; the Romans, with the power of their empire, which at that time had the rule over all the known world, or over all the Nations of that part of the world. Against... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Zechariah 14:3

Then, after that he hath sufficiently punished Jerusalem and the rest of the Jews, shall the Lord go forth, out of his holy place, (spoken after the manner of men,) as a warrior prepared for battle. Fight against those nations, which had sacked Jerusalem, and oppressed his people. As when he fought in the day of battle; as in any of those days past, when God fought for his people and gave them great victories. read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Zechariah 14:4

Zechariah 14:3, the Lord is said to dome forth to fight for his people, this 4th verse tells us where he will take his post, or make a stand, viz. on Mount Olivet, which for its situation, in its height, and nearness to Jerusalem and the temple, might appear a convenient post for succours to post themselves on. God (speaking after the manner of men) promiseth succours to his church, and assureth her of his nearness to her, and of the prospect he hath over all that is about her, or in her; that... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Zechariah 14:5

And ye, you that are members of the church, and whom God doth in wonderful power and majesty come to save, shall flee; filled with apprehensions of such strange things, and troubled at the convulsions and strugglings of nations against God and you, shall, as in a great fear, flee to some place of safety and repose; you will flee the valley itself which God maketh: by terrible things in righteousness doth God answer, and his people tremble before him when he cometh to save them. So here are... read more
