‘And God said, “Let the waters that are under the heaven be gathered together in one place and let the dry land appear”, and it was so. And God called the dry land ‘eretz’ and the waters that were gathered together he called seas. And God saw that it was good.’ As with the word ‘yom’ the word ‘eretz’ is not fixed in meaning. ‘And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament, and it was so. And God called the firmament Sky (or Heaven). And there was evening and there was morning the second day.’ So by His word the waters were separated to produce atmosphere, and the waters above were held up by His ‘sky’.
